Jack Daniel's is geen bourbon maar een Amerikaanse of Tennessee whiskey. Het grote verschil is dat de meeste Tennessee whiskey uit minder dan 51% mais bestaan of gefilterd worden over esdoornhoutskool. Jack Daniel's heeft al een distilleer vergunning sinds 1866, veel van de nieuwere bottelingen zijn een ode aan de 'vroegere' tijden.
