Marly Hendricks, kunstenaar, zat dit voorjaar zoals wij allen vast in haar huis. In Frankrijk weliswaar, omringd door de natuur. Toen ze vanuit haar isolatie twee tekeningen opstuurde naar haar vriendin Nicolien (aan haar eigen huis en tuin gekluisterd te Haarlem), raadde die haar aan om elke dag een tekening te maken en dat ‘het kleine leven’ te noemen. Marly begon haar directe omgeving nauwgezet vast te leggen, wat resulteerde in dit bijzondere kleurboek met bloemen en planten en hun bijbehorende vlinders en insecten en kleine zoogdieren. Nicolien Mizee, schrijfster en natuurliefhebber, voorzag de prenten van geestig en deskundig commentaar waarin we niet alleen iets over de flora en fauna leren, maar ook over de personages, hun relaties en hun verleden.
