Isaac Turner woont in Londen met zijn vader, de beroemdste klokkenmaker van het land. Als Isaac ’s avonds laat met zijn vader op de Big Ben is om de klok een uur terug te zetten, verdwijnt zijn vader plotseling in het niets. Het enige wat Isaac vindt, is een gebroken zakhorloge en een cryptische boodschap...
Isaac wordt opgevangen door zijn peetvader Solomon, die Speaker is van het Britse Lagerhuis. Hij belooft zijn invloed te gebruiken om Isaacs vader terug te vinden. Maar Isaac wil zelf ook het raadsel oplossen en krijgt hulp van in Solomons dochter Hattie. Zij gaat helemaal haar eigen gang en durft alles. Hattie neemt Isaac op sleeptouw en samen komen ze een groot en duister complot op het spoor.
Wat volgt is een adembenemende zoektocht vol raadsels en puzzels, waarbij Hattie en Isaac op de hielen worden gezeten door een levensgevaarlijke crimineel. Intussen wordt er in Engeland een verhit debat gevoerd over een nieuw wetsvoorstel voor een andere tijdmeting. Voortaan zou een uur 100 minuten moeten gaan tellen en een dag 10 uur lang zijn. Vanwaar dit vreemde voorstel? Heeft het te maken met de verdwijning van Isaacs vader?
