Het is oorlog, het is winter en in de grote steden is er nauwelijks te eten. Jaap, Nel en kleine Kees vertrekken per binnenschip met een grote groep 'bleekneusjes' naar het platteland in het noorden, waar nog wel genoeg te eten is. Jaap wordt gescheiden van zijn zus en broertje en ondergebracht bij een kinderloos echtpaar. Hij moet letterlijk van zich afslaan om in die nieuwe omgeving een plek voor zichzelf op te eisen.
De mooie illustraties in het boek zijn van Annette Fienieg.
