Basmatirijst heeft een lange korrel die relatief droog kookt. Deze soort komt oorspronkelijk uit het noorden van India en wordt daar dan ook veel gegeten, net als in Pakistan (tegen Noord-India aan), waar de basmatirijst van GreenAge vandaan komt. Basmatirijst heeft haar naam te danken aan haar aromatische, verfijnde geur: het is afgeleid van vasmati, uit het Sanskriet, wat geurig betekent. Basmatirijst is wat langer en dunner dan Thaise zus Jasmijn en ook wat droger. De rijst is uitermate geschikt voor Indiase gerechten als dahl, kedgeree, tikka masala, kip korma enzovoorts. Een van de meest gegeten rijstsoorten ter wereld. Maar dan met het voedzame en vezelrijke vliesje er nog omheen.
