Ingenieus verweeft hij hun verhalen. Brokken schetst het rijke culturele leven in de jaren dertig op Bali, waar kunstenaars uit de hele wereld naartoe trokken en ge?nspireerd en betoverd werden door de Balinese cultuur. Aan die wereld kwam een eind toen de Tweede Wereldoorlog uitbrak. De voortdurende angst in het kamp maakt hij indringend invoelbaar, maar dit verhaal laat ook zien hoe kunst in onmenselijke omstandigheden een redding kan zijn.
