Raffaelo Santi, die wij kennen als de schilder Raffaël, schilderde tientallen Madonna's. Het thema van de heilige moeder met het kind werd in de Renaissance door vele schilders gekozen, maar niet één schilder was zo met dit thema verbonden als Raffaël.
Loek Dullaart gaat in op de bijzondere verbinding van Raffaël met dit thema, een verbinding die ook iets aangeeft over de bijzondere individualiteit die Raffaël was.
