Kaia en zijn moeder verhuizen heel vaak, meestal omdat ze de huur niet meer kunnen betalen. Wanneer Kaia’s oma spoorloos verdwijnt, besluit zijn moeder dat ze in háár huis gaan wonen. Kaia hoopt dat dit het begin is van een nieuw leven waarin zijn moeder gelukkiger is en hij minder vaak afscheid hoeft te nemen.
Kaia gaat ook nu weer naar een nieuwe school. Op een dag, wanneer hij iets uit een boek moet kopiëren, is de school plotseling omringd door een mysterieuze mist, en gek genoeg lijkt hij helemaal alleen te zijn. Geen andere leerlingen, geen leraren... Het is het begin van een duizelingwekkend avontuur met verschillende werelden, dubbelgangers en een complot. Samen met zijn klasgenoot Sue zal hij alles op alles moeten zetten om het mysterie van de dubbelgangers te ontrafelen.
