In een weiland staan drie paardjes: Vlekje, Vosje en Zwartje. De paardjes hebben er een goed leven, met als hoogtepunt de jaarlijkse kermis, waar ze rondjes mogen lopen met kinderen op hun rug. Voor Vlekje en Vosje smaakt dat jaarlijkse uitje naar meer en ze halen de voorzichtige Zwartje over om samen met hen over de sloot te springen, het avontuur tegemoet.
In de wijde wereld hebben Vlekje en Vosje al snel een plekje gevonden waar ze zich thuis voelen: Vlekje wordt werkpaard op een boerderij en Vosje wordt rijpaard van een deftig meisje. En Zwartje? Die keert weer terug naar zijn oude vertrouwde wei. Voorlopig althans, want uiteindelijk is het Zwartje, het paardje dat niet wist wat het wilde en alles maar over zich heen liet komen, die de spannendste toekomst tegemoet gaat. Hoe? als circuspaard!
