Anton is geboren in Nederlands-Indië, als kind van een koloniale planter en een inlandse njai. Als hij tien is sterft zijn vader en moet hij vertrekken uit Java, naar zijn oom en tante in Nederland. Hij laat zijn inlandse moeder en zijn jeugd voorgoed achter. Een mensenleven later wacht hij in een Nederlands verpleeghuis op zijn einde. Tijdens een van haar bezoekjes geeft hij zijn kleindochter Ana de opdracht zijn keris pusaka te vinden, een erfstuk uit zijn Indische verleden. Gedurende de zoektocht naar de keris ontsluiert Ana niet alleen langzaam maar zeker het leven van haar grootvader, maar komt ook haar eigen leven onder een vergrootglas te liggen. Erfstuk is een roman over (de)kolonisatie binnen een familie, het intergenerationele trauma, schaamte, verlies en verraad.
