De Mercedes 300 SL (W198) werd gepresenteerd op de New York Auto Show.
Dit is waarschijnlijk het model dat sportauto's van de racebaan naar de straat bracht en is een van de eerste Grand Touring-wagens. In het jaar 1954 zag je sportauto's namelijk inderdaad uitsluitend op racebanen.
Na een verzoek van Max Hoffmann, een Oostenrijks-Amerikaanse auto dealer, besloot Daimler-Benz de 300 SL in serie te produceren. Het model baseerde op de 300 SL raceauto (W194) en had slechts enkele technische en esthetische aanpassingen.
De 300 SL (W198) is natuurlijk herkenbaar door zijn vleugeldeuren, die ook aan dit schaalmodel te zien zijn. De auto heeft een grijs metallic kleur, de meest bekende lak voor deze klassieke auto.
