Description
Ridder Hans trekt door het Zwarte Woud. Hij krijgt een bed en eten bij een oud visserskoppel. Hij maakt kennis met hun vreemde dochter Ondine. Hij wordt verliefd op haar en trouwt met haar. Zij blijkt een waternimf te zijn, die alleen in menselijke vorm kan overleven als zij menselijke liefde kent. Hans neemt Ondine mee naar zijn kasteel, waar de jaloerse Ursula haar liefdesconcurent wordt. Ursula blijkt de echte dochter van het oude visserskoppel en zij zal alles in het werk stellen om Hans voor zich te winnen. Hans kiest inderdaad de zijde van Ursula en Ondine verdwijnt in het water. De wet van de watergeesten is echter streng: zij zal doden wie haar bedroog. Het water overspoelt het kasteel en alles verandert in een groot meer.
