Vecna is de tegenwoordige verschijningsvorm van Henry Creel, verbannen naar de Upside Down na een episch gevecht met Eleven. Hij was het eerste kind met psychokinetische krachten in het beroemde lab in Hawkins, Indiana, "One" dus. Zijn uiterlijk is sterk geïnspireerd door Freddy Kruger uit de cult-horrorfilm Nightmare on Elm Street. De naam Vecna is een anagram van Vance, naar Jack Vance, de auteur op wiens fantasy-verhalen het magische systeem van Dungeons & Dragons is gebaseerd. Hierin komen de Forgotten Realms voor, waarin Vecna een voormalig menselijke koning en magiër was die een godheid werd en symbool staat voor het slechte an sich (evil), wat in de dualiteit van de wereld echter ook een voorwaarde voor en onlosmakelijk verbonden met het goede is.
