Een kleinschalige Zwitserse boer wordt plotseling geconfronteerd met twee mysterieuze, peilloos diepe gaten op zijn grond. De pastoor en de burgemeester kunnen hem niet helpen en ook de wetenschap staat voor een raadsel. In zijn ijver om het juiste te doen, maakt Tanner de verkeerde keuzes.
