Elliott en zijn broer en zus helpen het buitenaardse wezen naar zijn moederplaneet terug te keren, terwijl ze het wezen proberen geheim te houden voor hun ouders en voor de kwaadwillende Amerikaanse regering. De film werd een groot succes en overtrof destijds Star Wars als de meest winstgevende film aller tijden. De film werd eveneens genomineerd voor negen Oscars. Recensenten juichten de film toe als een tijdloos verhaal en hij werd door de Engelse website Rotten Tomatoes uitgeroepen tot beste sciencefictionfilm die ooit gemaakt werd.
